Chrome Plated Menu Holder from the Sergeant’s Mess of the Royal Marines Barracks at Chatham - 1949

Here on offer is a chrome plated menu holder from the Sergeant’s Mess of the Royal Marines Barracks at Chatham, Kent, dated 1949.

The front depicts the image of the insignia of the Royal Marines as used on their cap badges.

Behind that is a metal ring and the small gap between the two allows a menu card to be inserted and held in place.

Underneath the base, someone has engraved the details about where and when the holder is from:

CHATHAM

The Royal Marine Barracks, Chatham was a military installation occupied by the Royal Marines and located at the Gun Wharf at Chatham in Kent. The barracks were situated immediately to the south of the Dockyard, just above the Ordnance Wharf. The barracks were closed in 1950 and demolished in 1960.

Therefore, it is possible that this menu holder was taken as a souvenir by a serving Royal Marine, just before the barracks were closed in 1950.

This is genuine piece of Royal Marine memorabilia that is in excellent condition and could now make a great photo or picture stand or holder.

It measures 1.5” (3.8cm) diameter at the base and is 1.9” (4.9cm) high.

It weighs 50g.
