Genuine WW2 (Poland) Medal for Warsaw 1939-1945

Here on offer is a genuine full-size WW2 (Poland) Medal for Warsaw 1939-1945.

The gilt bronze Medal for Warsaw 1939–1945 (Polish: Medal za Warszawę 1939–1945) was a Polish commemorative medal awarded by the Polish People’s Republic to commemorate active participation in defending Warsaw in 1939, the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and in the liberation of Warsaw from Nazi Germany in January 1945.

It was Instituted October 26th 1945 by decree of the Council of State of the Polish People's Republic. Awarded to all soldiers and citizens that took part in...

1) Defence of Warsaw during September 1939 Nazi Invasion.

2) Participants of the Warsaw underground and uprising in 1944.

3) Liberators of Warsaw from Nazi Germany in January 1945

It was also awarded to foreign citizens if they participated in these events.

Note: One of the first people to be awarded the medal was the first President of Poland, B. Bierut and some high-ranking Polish Military.

On the obverse of the gilt bronze medal it depicts:

The image of a siren with a shield in the left hand and a sword in the right. They represent the coat of arms of the city of Warsaw. The top contains the inscription "1939" and "1945" where the sword almost acts as a dash between the two dates. At the bottom, "ZA WARSZAWE" (For Warsaw).

On the reverse it depicts:

"RP-OBRONCOM-BOJOWNIKOM-OSWOBODZICIELOM" (To the defenders, warriors, liberators) with oak leaves and three acorns at the bottom.

The ribbon is red with two lighter longitudinal bands along the sides representing the colours of Warsaw.

This is a fine original “worn” example, with signs of loss to the gilt finish and some fading to the ribbon colour.

The medal measures 1.3” (3.3cm) diameter and weighs 19g.
