Boer War Coin Brooch made from a 2-Shilling Silver ZAR Coin 1897 fitted in a Hallmarked Silver Brooch Cartwheel Frame c1900
Here on offer is a Boer War sweetheart coin brooch made with a 2-shilling silver ZAR (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) coin dated 1897.
The coin is fitted into a hallmarked silver brooch cartwheel frame, that uses a locking mechanism that means the coin can be removed as and when required.
The solid silver South African Republic (Transvaal) 2-shiliing coin was engraved by Otto Schultz and depicts on the obverse, the bearded bust of President Johannes Paulus Kruger.
On the reverse are the South African Republic coat of arms circled by the lettering:
ZUID AFRIK. REPUB. 1897
2 SHILLINGS
Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825-1904) was a prominent Boer leader against British rule and president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republic (1883-1902) which later became the Transvaal Colony under British rule and then the Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa.
The coins of the 1897 issue were struck at the South African Republic's Mint in Pretoria.
The brooch cartwheel frame, has on one edge of the inner lip, a full set of English hallmarks and an English maker’s mark.
The maker’s mark is, “W L” which is the makers mark for William Light, of Augusta Street, Birmingham.
The hallmarks are the Anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the Lion indicating it is made from English sterling silver and the year mark ‘a’ for 1900.
The cartwheel brooch frame uses a locking bar to secure the coin in place. This thin bar has “PATENT” stamped on it.
The brooch also retains its long pin and “C” clasp.
My last photo is page 115 from the book BOAR WAR MEMORABILIA, The Collectors Guide, that shows silver jewellery that was made from ZAR coins. You can see two examples of this type of brooch.
The brooch and coin are in excellent condition.
The brooch measures 1.4” (3.5cm) diameter and weighs 15.3g.
