Rare Large Bronze Award Medallion - 1839 Royal Botanic Society London – by Benjamin Wyon Sc.

Here on offer is an unissued solid bronze 1839 Royal Botanic Society London award medallion, by the famous engraver and medalist Benjamin Wyon Sc.

This finely detailed medallion has never been awarded or if it was, the recipient never had their details engraved on it?

I believe these award medallions where only issued in small numbers and where struck in Gold, silver plate and bronze.

The obverse displays a varied selection of plants with the date of the creation of the society, 1839 at the bottom, along with the designers name in small letters, B.WYON SC.

On the reverse is a wreath of roses, shamrocks and thistles, with the Queen’s crown at the top. The wreath is surrounded with the words:

ROYAL BOTANIC SOCIETY OF LONDON

The designers name, B.WYON is in small letters at the bottom.

The Royal Botanic Society of London was founded in 1839 by royal charter and was granted an area of eighteen acres within the inner circle of Regent's park. Robert Marnock, one of the outstanding horticulturalists and garden designers of the 19th century, laid out the gardens very much as they still are today. Shortly after its establishment, annual exhibitions or flower-shows were begun, and such exhibitions, not entirely confined to flowers, are still one of the features of the society. Queen Victoria agreed to be Patron of the Society, and members of the royal family, such as Mary of Teck, presented some of the prizes.

The medallion is in great condition, still retaining its fine detailing with some aged patina to bronze. There are a couple of edge dings at the 3 o’clock position.

It measures 2” (5.1cm) diameter and weighs 74.5g.
