Unusual WW1 Hallmarked Silver and Enamel Medal - “Relief Fund Sports” awarded to F. C. Rush - 1 Mile - 1914

Here on offer is an unusual WW1 hallmarked silver and enamel, Relief Fund Sports medal, by C. Usher, Leicester, England, 1914.

It was awarded to an F. C. RUSH of the Southend Harriers, for a 1 mile open handicap race at Twickenham, in 1914.

The Lord Mayor's War Relief Fund was established in August 1914 to help support wives and dependants of soldiers and sailors called upon to serve their country and those made unemployed due to the war. A National War Relief Fund was established by the Prince of Wales and he asked that local funds also be created.

The circular medal has been made from hallmarked silver and the front depicts the raised image of the British Union Jack and French Tri Colour flags in coloured enamel, below the words RELIEF FUND SPORTS set in blue enamel, all set with a laurel leaf border.

The reverse is etched with the winner’s details:

F. C. RUSH
SOUTHEND H. (Southend-on-Sea Athletics Club)
1 MILE HDCP (OPEN)
TWICKENHAM
1914.

Above this is the maker’s name:

C. USHER
L’ESTER§

It also has a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “P” for the year 1914.

It also shows the makers mark, “C.U” which relates to the maker:

CHARLES USHER, of Leicester, England.

Attached to the top is a suspension loop and ring that is also stamped with the Lion Passant for English silver (925).

This very early WW1 Relief Fund medal is truly a fine quality piece that is in beautiful undamaged condition.
