Genuine WW1 British Bronze Death Plaque (Death Penny) – James Watson

Here on offer is a WW1 1914-1918 British bronze death plaque, which is also known as the Death Penny.

This is a fine example of a GENUINE bronze memorial plaque issued to the next of kin of those who died during WW1 (or those who died later from causes attributable to service)

This particular example was awarded to:

JAMES WATSON

When I researched this name on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website, it came back with 77 people with the same name. Unfortunately, without any other related documentation, I can’t pinpoint this to a particular individual.

The plaque is 12cm diameter and is in excellent condition with a beautiful bronze patina.

Between the lions back foot and its tail there is a small engraved “15”

By the lion’s front foot are the engraved initials of the artist who designed the plaque, Edward Carter-Preston (E.CR.P.)

On the reverse you can just make out the edge and some parts of the letters of the “WA” combo stamp, which indicates this fine example was made at the "Woolwich Arsenal, London".

The plaque measures 4.75” (12.1cm) diameter and weighs 355g.
