Early WW2 RAF “Wings” Sweetheart Brooch - Sterling Silver and Enamel by Thomas L Mott
Here on offer is a fine example of a RAF sweetheart brooch from the early WW2 period or possibly late WW1, that consists of an RAF (King’s) Crown and detailed wings made from solid sterling silver and enamel.
In the centre are the letters RAF that are inlayed with blue enamel and set beneath the red enamel “Kings Crown”.
On the back of the brooch, it is stamped with a maker’s mark and the word:
STERLING
The maker’s mark is a paint palette and brushes encircling the letters T L M.
T L M stand for Thomas London Mott. who founded a wholesale jewellery business in Birmingham in 1875.
Born in 1881, Thomas Lyster Mott continued the legacy of his father (Thomas London Mott, 1848-1917), Thomas Snr encountered mixed fortunes and, when he was declared bankrupt in 1894, he can’t possibly have imagined the huge success with which the company would meet with Thomas Jnr at the helm.
During WW2, T L M produced a range of sweetheart brooches, with characteristic colourful enamel, for servicemen to give to their loved ones. These may have been among the company’s last designs before it was sold to the jewellery firm Shipton & Co, a thriving Birmingham business still in operation today.
The two most commonly seen marks are the paint palette and brushes encircling T L M, which was superseded by T.L.M. ENGLAND, usually along with the word STERLING.
The brooch is in excellent condition, with no damage to the enamel and it still has its original long brooch pin and ‘C’ clip.
The brooch measures 2.25” (5.7cm) wide and weighs 5g.
This is a great opportunity to obtain a rare example of an early WW2 RAF Sweetheart Brooch, which can only increase in value.
