Antique Georgian Mahogany Cased Pocket Compass – c1830

Here on offer is an impressive antique Georgian traveller’s compass is set in a hinged mahogany case and dating to around the 1830’s.

Complimented by the small handmade Georgian triangular brass hinges and fastened with a “7” shaped brass clasp.

Inside the lid is an original resellers/distributers label:

HUDSON
Optician
GREENWICH

I think Hudson relates to F.T. Hudson, who began his Greenwich, London, optical business in 1828. It appears that his major products were eyeglasses, expanding to include magnifiers and other instruments over the years.

Many wooden cased compasses of the Georgian period where unsigned, but the use of concealed hinges attaching the lid to the base, was a feature used predominately by Francis Barker, and it’s very likely this compass was made by Barker.

Now the compass itself has an attractive paper sunburst dial that is divided into four 90-degree quadrants and displays 32 cardinal and inter-cardinal points, with a “Fleur de Lys” for North.
There are signs of some areas of age “foxing” on the dial, but all the detailing can still be seen.

The elegant blued steel needle is also engraved with 'N' & 'S' letters and sits under a clean and clear glass crystal. There is some tarnishing to the gilt brass glass retaining ring.

It is in full working order and the needle is locked in position for transit by a brass pin that is pushed down when the lid is closed.

The wooden mahogany case is free of any splits or cracks.

The case measures 2.6” (6.5cm) by 2.6” (6.5cm) by 0.9” (2.3cm) and it weighs 55g.
