Cased Bristol Education Committee Hallmarked Silver Medal to EDWARD VALE for 6 Years Regular Attendance & Satisfactory Conduct - 1910
Here on offer is an antique Bristol Education Committee, large hallmarked silver medal awarded to EDWARD VALE for 6 years regular attendance and satisfactory conduct in 1910, complete with its presentation case.
In the early days of mass schooling in Victorian and then Edwardian Britain, attendance was a persistent issue. Parents often resented having to send their children to school, which often meant forfeiting much-needed income. To improve attendance levels, education authorities rewarded children with medals for a year without any absences.
One side of the medal features the detailed image of the official crest for Bristol and the words:
BRISTOL EDUCATION COMMITTEE
It also has the makers name, VAUGHTONS BIRM in tiny letters.
The other side has a laurel wreath with the award details in the centre and a full set of English hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “l” for the year 1910.
It also shows the makers mark, “V&S.” which relates to the maker:
Vaughtons Ltd of Birmingham, England.
There are also the words:
REGULAR ATTENDANCE & SATISFACTORY CONDUCT
The medal was made by VAUGHToNS Ltd, Goldsmiths & Medallists, Birmingham, which is actually printed in gold on the inside of the lid of the case.
The outer lid of the case is gilt embossed with the official crest for Bristol and Bristol Education Committee, it does have some wear marks consistent with its age.
This large medal is in excellent condition with just some tiny edge nicks.
It measures 1.75” (4.4cm) diameter and weighs 44g.
