WW2 No.36 Type II British 'Rifle' Mills Grenade by BBC Converted to a Table Lighter
Here on offer is great example of a now inert, original WW2 No.36 Type II British 'Rifle' Mills grenade made by BBC and now converted to a table lighter.
The front of the main body of the grenade has the letters BBC stamped on it (with a rivet covering the central “B”), which indicates the maker of the body was the British Bath Co, of Greenford, London.
These grenades were made from a number of individually manufactured parts, body, base plug etc, that were made by different manufactures and then assembled.
On the front is the filler plug, that is marked with a “Z” meaning the plug is made from Zinc and the letters “APDP” which indicates the foundry maker was, Alloy Pressure Die Products Ltd.
The flat section on the back, it is stamped with the letters A and letter C, which I can’t find a reference too?
This example is also fitted with a rifle grenade attachment base plate, so it could be launched from a rifle cup dispenser. The plate now has a chromed plated flared cover fitted to the top, to make a more attractive looking base.
It is stamped with M.G.M LTD which indicates the maker was, Metropolitan Gas Meter Co. of London and Nottingham. There are other ordinance marks, including “II” and the number /45, for the year 1945.
When the base plate is unscrewed you then also access and unscrew the base plug. With both removed you can access the flint screw and spring and you can see the main body is filled with wadding that will hold the lighter fuel and allow it to soak the wick.
The steel knurled edged base plug is stamped with various ordnance markings, being:
No.36 M II (broad arrow) /45 for 1945 and SEG the manufacturer Southern Engineering Group.
The lighter mechanism itself, is in full working order and works by pushing the modified original lever down which releases the sprung wick cover and creates a spark to light the wick.
It doesn’t contain any lighter fuel to comply with shipping regulations.
The grenade body has a lovely dark patina finish to the metal and the base plate has signs of surface rust.
PLEASE NOTE: This item is free from explosives (FFE and contains no explosive elements or parts thereof).
It measures 4.25” (11cm) high and the base plate is 2.5” (6.4cm) diameter.
It weighs a heavy 670g.
