French Chassepot M1866 Bayonet Shortened to a WW1 Close Combat Trench Knife
Here on offer is French Chassepot M1866 Bayonet that has been shortened to produce a WW1 combat or possibly a trench knife?
This knife has actually been crudely modified, probably in by a soldier in the field of action. It doesn’t reflect the quality of those that were produced by the French government during WW1 to provide the troops with trench knives.
Having said that, the blade has been shortened and tapered very well, but the brass grip has had all its fitments removed and has been hammered to the tang with a single steel rivet. The cross guard has been cut on both sides the provide two flat surfaces.
The now 7” blade has a grey and slightly pitted finish, especially on the spine which means I can’t make out the original arsenal name and date, but it will be from the late 19th century. You can still make out the “P” and “S” stamps on the ricasso on one side and the number “5” on the other.
You can also just make out the numbers “878” on the crossguard.
The blade also “wobbles” slightly against the crossguard
There is no scabbard/sheath with this knife.
The blade measures 7” (17.8cm) long and the knife is now 11.7” (29.6cm) in total length.
It weighs 385g.
