Antique Cased Bronze Newport District School Board Attendance Medal - to E. CHARLES in 1902
Here on offer is an antique bronze Newport District school board attendance medal awarded to E. CHARLES in 1902, complete with its presentation case.
In the early days of mass schooling in Victorian Britain, attendance was a persistent issue. Parents often resented having to send their children to school, which often meant forfeiting much-needed income. To improve attendance levels, education authorities rewarded children with medals for a year without any absences.
This medal was awarded 'for Punctuality and Attendance Every Time the School Was Open'.
White metal medals were given for the first year a pupil had 100% attendance. As this example is made from solid bronze, I believe this was for 3years + continued attendance.
One side of the medal features a laurel wreath, star and emblems of the countries of the United Kingdom - rose, thistle, leek and shamrock. It is also engraved with the pupil’s name, E. CHARLES and date 1902.
The other side normally shows a castle, but as 1902 was the coronation of King Edward VII, it depicts the profiles of the crowned King and Queen.
The medal was made by P. Vaughton & Sons, Gothic Works, Birmingham, which is actually printed in gold on the inside of the lid of the case. The outer lid of the case is embossed with NEWPORT DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ATTENDANCE MEDAL, and it does have some wear marks consistent with its age.
This medal is in excellent/mint condition with a nice age patina.
It measures 1.5” (3.9cm) diameter and weighs 31g.
