Cased Royal Engineers English Hallmarked Solid Silver Maltese Cross Medal by Vaughtons Ltd - Cricket in Malta 1912

Here on offer is an interesting cased Royal Engineers (R.E.) English hallmarked solid silver Maltese cross medal or fob, by Vaughtons Ltd, Birmingham, England.

It was awarded for cricket in Malta in 1912, but I can’t find reference to any such matches or events in Malta, in 1912?

The Maltese cross shaped medal has been made from hallmarked silver and the front depicts the raised image of the gothic letters R E, entwined, surrounded by a circle of laurel leaves. This looks like the insignia used by the Royal Engineers on Edwardian EVIIR versions of their cap badges.

Above this is the word:

MALTA

and below the words:

CRICKET 1912

The reverse is still blank, but has a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “O” for the year 1912/13.

It also shows the makers mark, “V&S.” which relates to the maker:

Vaughtons Ltd of Birmingham, England.

Attached to the top is a suspension loop and ring that is also stamped with the Lion Passant for English silver (925).

It also comes with its original red leather covered case, which has the following embossed on the top of the lid:

R. E.
MALTA
1912.

Inside the silk lined lid is stamped with the maker’s name and details:

VAUGHToNS Ltd
Goldsmiths & Medallists
BIRMINHAM

The medal fits neatly into a velvet lined recessed section of the base.

This pre-WW1 medal is truly a fine quality piece that is in beautiful undamaged condition and warrants further research.

It measures 1.1” (3cm) square and weighs 13.5g.
