WW1 Trench Art Brass Letter Opener with a Beautiful Layered Section Handle

Here on offer is a WW1 period trench art brass letter opener with a stunning layered handle.

The scimitar shaped brass 4.1” blade it etched on one side with “THE GREAT WAR” and on the other, “1914 – 1918”.
There is a small oval shaped brass crossguard that connects to the brass ferrule.

What is special about this letter opener is the beautiful layered squared shaped handle.

It seems to have been made from tapered sections of dark red Bakelite and a yellowish clear celluloid with thin brass divider plates. These are all securely held in place by a hexagonal domed nut shaped pommel, that fits onto the tang of the blade.

It is in excellent condition with just some minor age patina to the brass metal.

This really is an impressive and unusual piece of WW1 trench art.

The measures 4.1” (10.5cm) long and its total length is 6.75” (17.2cm).

It weighs 50g.
