Antique Silver Omani Khanjar Jambiya Dagger with Horn and Silver Piqué Handle
Here on offer is a fine and beautiful example of an antique silver Omani Khanjar or Jambiya Dagger with silver and horn handle.
This impressive example has a traditionally shaped blond horn handle that has a finely applied pattern of silver Piqué work on the top and the front, along with two silver coned studs.
The handle fits tightly to the double-edged curved steel blade that has a central ridge. The antique blade now has an overall dark staining to its finish, but no rust and is actually in excellent condition.
The blade and wide ferrell fits tightly into the sheath, known as an “Asib”, that is made of wood covered on the front with ornately worked silver.
The front has finely applied silver wire and filigree decoration, along with some chased decoration.
Attached in the centre is a raised bridge with loops that would attach to a waist belt/sash.
The back is covered with a now slightly faded soft blue cloth.
A Jambiya also spelled janbiya, jambya, jambia and janbia, also known as a shibriyeh in the Levant, is a specific type of dagger with a short-curved blade with a central ridge that originated from the Hadhramaut Governorate region of Yemen. They have spread to other countries in the Middle East, to other countries in the Arab world, and to parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia. Men typically above the age of 14 wear it as an accessory to their clothing.
The dagger has a 6.5” (16.5cm) curved blade and the dagger in its sheath measures approximately 12” (30.5cm) long.
It weighs 635g.
This Jambiya dagger is excellent condition with no damage that I can see, just a couple of lose strands of silver to the lower edge that you can just feel if you run your hand along the edge.
Fine examples of this quality often sell for over £1000 and are increasing in value. So at this price this is a great investment!
