Antique French Bevelled Glass and Gilt Repoussé Silk Lined Trinket Casket and Pocket Watch Stand with Stick Pin Cushion c1880
Here on offer is an unusual antique French bevelled glass and gilt metal repoussé, silk lined trinket casket and pocket watch stand with stick pin cushion, circa 1880.
The trinket box has an ornate gilt repoussé scroll/leaf pattern on the sides and it has a thick bevelled glass hinged top with retaining clip at the front.
Inside the light green silk cushion and lining are in excellent condition and there are no chips to the bevelled glass that I can see. The lid hinges well and closes snugly.
The trinket box stands on four scrolled gilded scrolled supports which are all in excellent condition and the box sits solidly on a surface with no issues.
The pocket watch section has a clear bevelled glass mirror and gilt hook to display a pocket watch.
What is really unusual about this piece is the oval silk covered pin cushion that is fitted above the mirror, which I assume was used to store stick pins or even hat pins?
This type of decorative piece dates from the 1880’s and would have been purchased as a luxury novelty item at that time from the fashionable stores of the Paris arcades that flanked the Promenade of the Garden at Cardinal Richelieu's Old Paris Palace known as the Palais Royal.
The gilt no has a slight age patina to the finish, but the whole piece is in excellent condition and it would make a great addition to any Victorian collection.
The trinket box section measures 2.75” (7cm) by 2.4” (6cm) and the back watch/cushion section measures 5.75” (14.6cm) high.
It weighs 210g.
