Early WW2 German Army Officer’s Dagger by Anton Wingen Jr with a Dark Orange Grip

Here on offer is an early WW2 German Army Officer’s dagger by Anton Wingen Jr. with a beautiful dark orange coloured grip.

All the dagger fittings have a plated finish, including the scabbard but do show some signs of aged plating loss.

This early Army Officer's dagger has the smaller Anton Wingen Jr. trademark, which is not seen very often on army daggers.

Anton Wingen Jr. firm, was not a big producer of this type dagger and they often elected to purchase fittings outside of the company.

The 14 oak leaf pattern pommel is in great condition, showing quality hand finishing to the oak leaves. Just some minor loss of plating to the top edge and a couple of spots on the pommel collar.

The grip is the beautiful dark orange solid trolon/celluloid type. There are two old small cracks at the base, where it fits into the ferrule. I think these would have been caused by the pommel being over tightened at some point in the past. They would be easily covered over if a knot was fitted.

The spread winged eagle crossguard looks to be the generic type “B” type. It is believed that this style was originally made from a casting developed by the Anton Wingen Jr. firm.

This example shows good detailing to the eagle’s wings, talons and mobile wreath/swastika. You can still see the eagle’s eye and sloping beak, but there is some loss of plating in small patches on the front and back edges.

The ferrule has the finely detailed oak leaf design, retaining all of its plated finish.

The nickel-plated blade measures 10.2” (25.8cm) in length and is in great condition with a slightly dulled finish (this would polish bright if required). There are also some pinhead sized dark spots that look like they would polish out if so required.

On the reverse ricasso it is etched with the unusually small standing knight trademark, having the firm's initials above "A.W. Jr", and below, the location city "SOLINGEN".

The blade is complete with its brown leather buffer pad.

The scabbard plating nicely matches the hilt mounts and the pebbled finish is still crisp, with just some minor loss of plating on the upper front section. It is perfectly straight and has excellent carrying bands, with great overlapping oak leaf depiction and hand enhancing to the veins. The throat is a fairly thick variety and it is retained by two flush mount headless side screws.

The dagger in the scabbard measures a total of 15.75” (40cm) long and weighs 380g.
