Two Unusual WW1 German Officer’s Hazelnut Wood Cigar -Cigarette Holders in Original Box
Here on offer are two unused hazelnut wood cigar or cigarette holders, still in their original labelled “Christmas 1917” cardboard Field Post shipping box.
My understanding is that they were made by disabled German ex-service men, in hospital workshops, to be sent to the WW1 battle front as a Christmas gift in 1917.
A large label originally sealed the box, but it was cut on three sides, now allowing it to “hinge” open along one of the smaller sides.
The label would be filled out with: the name, division, regiment etc, for shipping purposes.
This label has no writing on it, so was never actually shipped to the front.
On one end it translates to, “Hospital Workshops for the care of the War victims” and on the other end, “War Christmas 1917”.
On the bottom it translates to: Hazelnut Cigar and Cigarette – 1 Dozen.
Given the size of the holders, I feel that only half a dozen would fit into this size box. This was probably a “common” label used different size boxes during the war.
Inside it still has the old original tissue paper.
The two mint, unused hazelnut wooden holders have been hand-carved with a smooth shaped mouthpiece, while still retaining the bark on the main body.
The holders each measure 3” (7.7cm) long and the box is 4” (10.3cm) by 3.1” (8cm), weighing 42g.
