Here on offer is an unusual hand carved marble image of a British 8th Army soldier sending a birthday message to his mother, by pigeon from North Africa in 1943.
This is the type of work that was produced by Italian and German POW’s that were interned in North Africa.
The front depicts a British soldier in desert uniform including helmet, laying down and passing an envelope /message to a pigeon or dove.
Around the edge are the words:
GREETINGS TO MOTHER MANY HAPPY RETURNS FROM TOM
And at the bottom:
N. AFRICA 1943
From the 1943 date, this was possibly from Tunis, after the British chased Rommel across from El Alamein during 1942.
It is in perfect condition and has a marble support on the back, allowing it to be displayed on a desk or shelf.
It measures 7.5” (19cm) high by 5.5” (14cm) wide and weighs 625g.
