Unusual WW1 ‘FUMSUP’ - TOUCH WOOD Soldier’s Lucky Gold-Plated Charm Brooch with a Backing Feather
Here on offer is an original and unusual WW1 ‘FUMSUP’ - TOUCH WOOD soldiers lucky gold-plated charm, that has been made into a brooch with a backing feather.
They come in all sorts of types and this one has a lovely gold-plated body with moving arms (with Thumbs UP) and a wooden painted head, so the soldier could ‘Touch Wood’ for luck before a battle.
This is the only one I have come across that has been made into what I assume is a sweetheart brooch, or maybe just a brooch that a solider could wear on his uniform?
These charms were given to WW1 soldiers, as a “Good Luck” token that could be carried with them into battle.
A wire goes through the head allowing it to swivel and is folded into a loop at the top so it can be attached to a chain.
The hollow metal body is in good original condition.
The egg-shaped woodenhead is still a solid piece of wood, with no cracks and amazingly it still has the painted eyes and nose, which is very rare to find.
A bar pin has been fitted to the back along with a small metal holder that has a cut down feather secured in it. One side of the feather is now missing and the charm shows some signs of discolouration and light corrosion where the pin fits to the back of the charm.
The charm measures 1.2” (3cm) long and 0.4” (1cm) wide across the arms.
It weighs 2.5g.
