Small Antique Victorian Hallmarked Silver Perfume Bottle by Charles May – 1893
Here on offer is a small antique hallmarked silver perfume or scent bottle with hinged lid by Charles May, assayed in Birmingham in 1893.
It has an elaborate floral repousse decoration to both body and lid.
It has a perfect glass interior and still has its original tight-fitting glass stopper.
It is in excellent condition with just minimal wear to the raised surfaces and the hinged lid works and fits tightly. There is a tiny chip to the very top of the glass stopper which is hard to see in the photos.
On the outer edge of the lip, it is stamped with the maker’s mark, CM and a full set of English silver hallmarks.
These are; the lion passant denoting English silver, the anchor, indicating it was assayed in Birmingham and the date letter t for 1893.
The makers mark CM refers to the silversmith, Charles May, of Victoria Park Road, Hackney, London.
There is also the lion passant and date letter t, stamped on the circular base.
It measures 2.25” (5.7cm) high by 1.3” (3.2cm) diameter and weighs 63g.
