Unusual Set of Six Edward VIII and Royal Navy Related Napkin Rings in Fitted Wooden Case c1936
Here on offer is an unusual set of six Edward VIII and Royal Navy related napkin rings, in a green felt lined fitted wooden case, circa 1936.
These may have been produced as a souvenir of the planned coronation of Edward VIII, that didn’t actually take place as he abdicated before that took place.
Each napkin ring has been made from a slightly flattened and shaped metal ring, that has a British West Africa 1 penny coin completing the ring at the top. The metal is not plated and is possibly stainless steel or nickel silver?
My understand that these coins are actually quite rare and one of the only countries to issue coins with the name King Edward VIII on them was British West Africa.
Edward VIII only ruled as King for ten months and no countries issued coins with his portrait, just a few with his name on their coins.
The coins of British West Africa have a star on them and a hole in the middle, so the locals could string the coins together and then wear them.
There were three different denominations produced, 1/10th Penny, 1/2 Penny and 1 Penny. All the coins were struck in the UK and then sent to Africa.
What I find interesting, is the fact that each of the six napkin rings has the name of a different Royal Navy ship professionally stamped on the inside. The names of the ships are:
HMS Shropshire
HMS Marlborough
HMS Kent
HMS Repulse
HMS Philoctetes
HMS Danae
I have done some research but can’t find any relationship or Royal Navy event that links Edward VIII to these six Royal Navy ships?
It is a conundrum and if anybody can help to identify the relationship that would be greatly appreciated.
The napkin rings are in excellent/mint condition and the case just has a few shallow knocks.
Each napkin measures 3” (8cm) by 1.2” (3cm) and weighs 45g.
The total weight of the six napkin rings and the lidded case is a heavy 1Kg.
