WW2 German Card Game - Wehrmachts Quartett Kriegsmarine – Owner Named and Dated 1942

Here on offer is one of German WW2 card games that were popular with children, from the "Quartett" series, that were made by Sala games in the 1940’s.

What I love about this set is that written on the back of the deck packet, are the details and date of the original owner, Robert Brebach, from Flegessen, 1.7.1942.

There is also a handwritten note inside the lip of the packet, that seems to translate to read:

Grandma T. Friedauart here. Dad was on vacation. 1.7.1942.

So, it seems this set was given to Robert Brebach by his grandmother on 1st July 1942, as his dad was away possibly fighting in the war?

Quartett decks are made up of sets of four cards, the Quartette (quartets) from which the game derives its name.

This is the Wehrmachts-Quartett Kriegsmarine deck of cards and features 6 sets of Kriegsmarine vessels, in groupings of 4, totalling 24 cards.

The sets consist of the Unterfeeboat (U-Boat), Schnellboot (S-Boat), Panzerschiff, Kreuzer, Zerftorer and Kuftenbatterie.

The winner is the player who ends up with the highest number of complete quartets.

The cards in this deck are in excellent condition, and retain their original colour and have minimal foxing.

The instruction “rules” card is now missing from the deck, but examples can be found online for reference, if so required.

The deck packet has some old selloptape holding an edge rip at the top together and some handwriting and signature marks.

Each card measures 4” (10cm) by 2.4” (6cm).

The deck of cards weighs 50g.
