Antique Japanese Satsuma Earthenware Charger Depicting a Samurai Warrior

Here on offer is a fine late 19th Century Meiji Period Japanese Satsuma Plate, depicting a Samurai Warrior.

The heavy earthenware charger has been hand glazed to show a Samurai Warrior in ornate dress, with his sword and traditional fan.

The glaze has been applied in a “raised” manner to highlight the facial features like the nose and chin, along with the fingers, sword grip and all the background dots and rim pattern.

It is in excellent condition, no cracks that I can see, just some minor chips a couple of areas of the rim glaze. The glaze also shows some age cracks that are to be expected on a piece of this age.

There are no makings on the base, just the unglazed support ring.

The charger measures 13.5” (34cm) diameter by 2.25” (5.8cm) high and weighs a heavy 2.5Kg.
