Antique East African Sudanese Arm Dagger and Sheath by the Nuba or Fur People

Here on offer is an antique East African Sudanese arm dagger with sheath, probably from the late 19th century.

Arm daggers of this type were widely used by various cultures throughout Sudan and attributing them to one specific group can be difficult. They were commonly found among the Fur and Nuba peoples. The Nuba people are indigenous inhabitants of central Sudan. Nuba are various indigenous ethnic groups who inhabit the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan state in Sudan.

The grip and the cross guard are carved from one piece of beautifully grained dark African hardwood that finishes with a round pommel. There are some light nibbles to the edge of the pommel, but no cracks or splits to the wood.

The straight double-edged iron blade has a well-formed central rib on each side, running the length of the blade. It does have dark patches and age pitting on both surfaces. Please see my photos.

The sheath is made from a combination of a tooled brown leather central section and impressive reptile skin sections. It has a braided leather ball tip and meticulously braided loop for the attached braided leather arm ring.

The blade measures 7.75” (19.7cm) and the whole knife is 12.25” (31.2cm) long.

It weighs 280g.

This is a unique knife and a great African tribal collector’s piece.
