WW2 Private Purchased Fixed Blade Commando Style Knife with Leather Sheath

Here on offer is what I believe to be a WW2 period private purchased fixed blade commando style knife with original leather sheath.

This came from an ex-museum stock that was donated by ex-British service men after WW2.

This double-edged knife has seen a “life”, especially the blade that has been really worn down on both sides, through sharpening over the years.

There is a maker’s mark on one side of the blade that is hard to make out, but appears to read as:

COOPER & SON
EMULOUS
SHEFFIELD ENDLAND
EMULOUS was a trade mark that Wm. Cooper of Sheffield used as shown in my last photo which is one of their adverts.

It is actually difficult to accurately date this knife, and I can’t find out when they actually registered that trade mark?

The knife itself has been very well made and has a solid brass pommel that fixes to the blade tang by a large recessed slotted grub screw. The grip is made from multiple shaped red/brown leather washers that fit very snuggly up against the brass fingerguard.

The 5.25” blade shows dark areas of pitting and loss of width due to use and sharpening over the years, but still holds a sharp edge to both edges.

The brown leather sheath is in good condition, with all the rivets and stitching still in place and it retains the belt slot in the upper section. There is a smaller slot at the top which provably originally had a strap and stud to secure the knife in the sheath. Someone has fitted some tightly wound copper wire around the centre section as additional support or just decoration?

The blade measures 5.25” (13.4cm) and the overall length of the knife is 9.75” (24.7cm).

It weighs 250g.
