Scottish Silver Thistle Nurses Buckle by James Bowman 1959
Here on offer is a beautiful example of a Scottish silver “Thistle” nurses buckle by James Bowman and dating to 1959.
What is unusual about this buckle is the fact it is now a one-piece buckle. I am not sure if it started life as a normal two-piece buckle or indeed was originally made as a one-piece?
I have however seen this type before, used with an elasticated belt, so it didn’t need to unfasten.
It is a fine example with an ornate thistle pattern to the front. On the reverse it retains both silver loop bars for attachment to the nurse’s elasticated belt.
On the back of the buckle there are a full set of English hallmarks and a maker’s mark.
The clear hallmarks show it was assayed in Birmingham with a date letter “K” for the year 1959.
The maker mark is:
J B
I believe J B refers to James Bowman of Edinburgh.
The buckle measures 3.5” (8.9cm) by 2.3” (6cm) and weighs 33g.
