Vintage African Tebu Ceremonial Short Sword with Leather Strap
Here on offer is a vintage African Tebu ceremonial short sword with leather strap.
I believe this short sword was made by the Tebu people, indicated by the characteristic bulb on the bottom of the sheath.
This type of short sword or large knife are very “flat” in their construction. Please see photo.
The grip and crossguard have a raised “M” pattern to the leather along with other fine embossed tribal patterns.
The single edged slightly curved blade is in excellent condition and has an etched pattern on the front.
The leather sheath has a number of raised rectangular sections with some fine embossing to the finish and at the tip, there is the characteristic “bulb”.
It also still has the thin leather strap attached.
The Tebu or Toubou people are an ethnic group inhabiting northern Chad, southern Libya, north-eastern Niger and north-western Sudan. They live mostly as nomadic herders.
The blade measures 15.75” (40cm) long and the whole sword in the sheath measures 23.25” (59cm).
It weighs 555g.
This would make an excellent addition to any collection of African tribal art.
