Large Nickel-Plated Bronze Royal Navy Salon Culinaire Medallion – LSTD B.P. Thornton - H.M.S. Argonaut

Here on offer is an unusual Royal Navy Salon Culinaire Medallion awarded to LSTD B.P. Thornton who served on H.M.S. Argonaut.

HMS Argonaut (F56) was a Leander-class frigate that served with the Royal Navy from 1967 to 1993. She took part in the Falklands War in 1982, sustaining damage and casualties in action.

The large medallion appears to be made from bronze with a thick nickel plating that is in excellent condition, with just some minimal loss on the edge.

It still has a bright finish which is actually hard to photograph.

On the front it depicts a salmon, lobster and roast chicken, with the words:

ROYAL NAVY SALON CULINAIRE

On the reverse it is engraved with the winner’s details, rank, name and service number:

LSTD B.P. THORNTON
D175900V
H.M.S. ARGONAUT

Set inside a circular laurel wreath frame.

This unusual medallion must have been awarded before 1993, because HMS Argonaut was decommissioned in that year.

The International Salon Culinaire has a rich history of being one the world’s top chef competitions. Starting in 1902, the competition has a reputation for launching emerging culinary talents into the UK hospitality industry.

The medallion measures 2” (5.1cm) diameter and weighs 57g.
