WW1 Eastern Front German Boot or Trench Knife with Deer Antler Grip – Blade Etched “RUSSLAND 1915”
Here on offer is what appears to be a WW1 Eastern Front German boot or trench knife with a deer antler grip.
The single edged blade is faintly etched on one side with the words:
RUSSLAND 1915
Translates from German to English as “Russia 1915”.
This implies it was used during the German successful advances into Russia during this early period of WW1.
The knife has a copper ferrell connecting the blade to the fine deer antler grip.
The grip has been crafted from one piece of deer antler that is fitted to the blade tang by a two brass pins.
What is interesting and somewhat puzzling about this knife are the words that have been written in black ink/paint on the copper pommel cap.
They are rubbed and very hard to read now, but are possibly:
Granatsp
gef bei
Rousera
(Garnet found at Rousera?)
This however doesn’t translate from German to anything that makes sense in English? (Garnet sp found at Rousera?)
If anybody can help with a translation, it would be greatly appreciated.
Sadly, the original leather sheath is no longer with the knife.
The knife is in excellent condition for its age with just some light age staining to the blade and dents at the tip.
The blade measures 4.4” (11cm) long and the complete knife is 8.7” (22cm).
It weighs 78g.
