Austrian M1874 Gras Sword Bayonet with Scabbard made by Styer in Austria in 1881

Here on offer is an Austrian M1874 Gras sword bayonet and scabbard that was commercial made by Steyer in Austria in 1881.

This type of bayonet was the last of the French "sword-type" bayonets and was manufactured from 1874 to about 1885.

I believe it was made to fit the French Model 1874 "Gras" Infantry Rifle.

The bayonet has a solid brass pommel with a working integral latching mechanism (push-button/spring-steel).

The grip is made from two slabs of walnut that have some light usage dents and are held in place by two steel rivets.

The blued steel crossguard has an upper guard with the adjustable muzzle-ring and the lower guard forming a hooked "blade-breaker" quillion.

It does show some signs of surface pitting and is stamped with a serial no. 26138.

The triangular (3 edged) steel blade is in excellent condition with just some areas of light staining.

It is engraved on the top “spine” edge with:

Waffenfabrik Steyr 1881

This means this a commercial example and was made in Austria, by Steyr, in 1881.

Steyr's commercial made M1874 bayonets are marked in German, “Waffenfabrik Steyr” (Weapons Factory Steyr).

The blade is also stamped with what I think is an inspection mark, which is a “C” inside a recessed diamond?

The blued steel scabbard is in excellent un-dented condition and is semi-oval with a ball finial. It has some light surface pitting to the finish and it’s stamped at the top with two possible inspection marks and a a mis-matched serial no. 71400.

The blade measures 21.5” (52cm) and the bayonet itself 25.4” (64.5cm) long.

It weighs a heavy 820g.
