British 19th Century 1856/58 Pattern Yataghan Sword Bayonet with Leather Scabbard - Export Version

Here on offer is a what I believe to be an antique British 1856/58 Pattern Yataghan sword bayonet with its original black leather scabbard.

This example is from a group of bayonets I have acquired, that were stored in a chest for years from a now closed museums donated stock.

I understand that it was originally made to be used for the Model 1853, .577 calibre Enfield (2-band) rifled infantry short-musket.

I am told that these bayonets were both issued to British units and exported in large numbers to both the Union and Confederate armies during the American Civil War.

This bayonet is a typical export example, as it does not bear any markings at all, no British military issue or War Department stamps, or even a maker’s mark.

The yataghan style wavy steel blade has a flat spine and broad single fuller on both sides. The blade is double-edged for the last 5” (13cm).

The bayonet has seen a “service” life and all the metal fittings including the blade shows signs of light rust pitting/staining to the finish. There are also some nicks on the cutting edge of the blade, but it does retain quite a bright finish. Please see my photos.

The grip still retains its two black chequered leather grips that show some signs of wear but are still held in place by three rivets.

The press-stud and external spring locking mechanism is currently rusted in place, but is complete and could be freed up.

The mortise rifle plug-in slot has a modified and extended slot that is about 2” (5cm) long, clearly to fit a different rifle during its service life?

The bayonet comes with its original leather scabbard with steel mounts. The steel mounts are age pitted but are complete and still each held in place with two metal staples. The lower mount has lost the metal end section and the tip of the blade pokes through. The leather shows signs of surface age cracking but is solid and the stitching has come apart on the reverse.

The blade measures 23”” (58.5cm) and the bayonet itself 28.3” (72cm) long.

It weighs a heavy 915g.
