British 19th Century 1856/58 Pattern Yataghan sword bayonet by Alex Coppel Solingen
Here on offer is a what I believe to be an antique British 1856/58 Pattern Yataghan sword bayonet that was made by Alex Coppel, Solingen Germany.
This example is from a group of bayonets I have acquired, that were stored in a chest for years from a now closed museums donated stock.
I understand that it was originally made to be used for the Model 1853, .577 calibre Enfield (2-band) rifled infantry short-musket.
I am told that these bayonets were both issued to British units and exported in large numbers to both the Union and Confederate armies during the American Civil War.
On one side of the blade, the ricasso has a War Department (WD) “X” stamp, that I think measn it was sold or sold out of service, above a crown and number “13” and a “B” that relates to a B.S.A. inspection mark.
On the other side, the ricasso displays an early example of a “scales” stamp which relates to the manufacturer, Alex Coppel of Solingen, Germany.
The crossguard is also stamped with an early serial/issue number, 0932.
The yataghan style wavy steel blade has a flat spine and broad single fuller on both sides. The blade is double-edged for the last 5” (13cm).
The bayonet has seen a “service” life and all the metal fittings including the blade shows signs of light rust pitting/staining to the finish. There are also some nicks on the cutting edge of the blade, but it does retain quite a bright finish. Please see my photos.
The grip still retains its two black chequered leather grips that show some signs of wear but are still held in place by three rivets.
The press-stud and external spring locking mechanism is currently rusted in place, but is complete and could be freed up.
The slightly concave shaped mortise rifle plug-in slot is about 1.25” (3.2cm) long.
The bayonet does not come with a scabbard.
The blade measures 22.6”” (57.5cm) and the bayonet itself 28” (71cm) long.
It weighs a heavy 850g.
