French Le Berger – Laguiole - Folding Knife with Silver Jaguar Bolsters
Here on offer is a beautiful and unusual example of a French Le Berger Laguiole folding knife.
I believe this knife was by the artisan Jean Pierre Barillet.
It has a 440 stainless steel blade with a worked top edge. On one side of the blade, it is etched with:
Le Berger
LAGUIOLE"
Near the hinge it is stamped 440 which is the grade of stainless steel used This is the highest grade of cutlery steel on the market. It contains more carbon, allowing for high edge retention when properly treated and it is capable of attaining one of the highest hardness ratings of any other steel on the Rockwell scale.
The bulbous dark wooden grip has silver bolsters (tests for 925), that depict a leaping Jaguar’s head at one end and its rear legs at the other.
The spine shows fine chilled work and it has a forged bee, albeit not very detailed, near the hinge.
The blade measures 4” (10.2cm) long and the knife is 8.5” (21.5cm) in total length, when fully open.
It weighs 111g.
