Signed Portrait of a WW2 British Officer in Uniform – Italy 1944

Here on offer is a fine portrait of a British military officer in uniform, with his pipe!

The portrait has been painted using oils on a wooden board and is signed in the lower left hand corner:

H. MANSFIELD – PROFFITT
ITALY 44

I assume the officer’s name is H. Mansfield or H. Mansfield – Proffitt?

I have done some basic research, but can’t find any reference to him. Clearly it warrants further in-depth researching.

It seems the officer is wearing the medal ribbon brooch bar for the Africa Star war medal with a silver rosette, above his left breast pocket.

A rosette was awarded if you qualified for the 1st Army Bar, 8th Army Bar, North Africa Bar or a combination of these bars. Only one rosette would be awarded regardless of whether more than one were awarded.

It is in excellent condition but there is some slight paint loss in a couple of areas on the painting. Please see my photos.

The picture has been mounted in an original period dark wood open frame.

The frame measures 15.4” (39cm) by 10.4” (26.5cm) and weighs 575g.
