Original British WW1-2 Period Blue Stable 'Trophy' Belt
Here on offer is an original WW1-2 period stable belt that has had cloth and cap badges attached by its original owner.
A stable belt would originally have been worn by a cavalryman when working in and around stables - hence the name. But gradually their use spread to all units of the British army.
This style of belt was popular with soldiers during WW1 and WW2. The addition of badges was quite popular and marked out a man as an old soldier. I believe this style is now referred to as a 'trophy belt', souvenir belt' or 'hate belt' by collectors.
This belt is made from blue coloured cotton webbing and features leather sections and straps with metal buckles. It seems to be an earlier version that has a leather money 'purse' pouch attached. It originally had a press-stud closure on the cover, but it has lost the stud part over the years of use. There is a makers mark stamped into the leather that reads as LETO (over a diamond) Regd. I can’t actually find any details about this maker.
A number of cloth and metal badges have been attached to the belt, that include two original cloth badges; one is a RAF Wireless Operator Trade Badge and the other a RAF Navigators Wing badge.
Then there are various cap badges, including; The King's Shropshire Light Infantry, WW1 George V Royal Canadian Engineers, Gloucestershire Regiment Sphinx Badge, Royal Corps of Signals, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, WW2 U.S. Army Air Force wings propeller pin badge and a U.S. Army gilt pin badge.
There is also a RAF button and a Royal Navy button along with a nice enamel RAF “horseshoe” sweetheart brooch with a missing fixing pin.
All these badges along add up to a sizable value that makes the an excellent investment.
It measures 33.25” (84.5cm) long (to the end of the straps) by 2.75” (7cm) wide and weighs 135g.
The belt is in excellent condition with some signs of it being worn and fading to the blue canvas.
