Genuine Aboriginal Australian Woomera Spear Thrower
Here on offer is genuine Aboriginal Australian woomera spear thrower.
This large 33” long spear thrower is I believe, hand carved from a beautiful piece of mulga wood.
It is a 'male' spear thrower, meaning it has a wooden peg at one end that is held in place with kangaroo sinew. This is insert into a conical depression in the bottom of the hunting spears.
At the opposite end it has a large blob of spinifex gum that acts as a counterbalance.
By throwing a spear with a woomera, the hunter prolongs the period of contact between himself and the spear, thus increasing the weapon's velocity and accuracy.
Inserted in the spinifex resin of the handle of this one, is a very sharp piece of white quartz rock. This is used for cutting, shaping or sharpening. The spear thrower is also used as a fire-making saw, as a receptacle of mixing ochre, in ceremonies and also to deflect spears in battle.
Spinifex resin is a gum coating of some species of spinifex grasses. This sticky resin is traditionally used as an adhesive in tool making by Aboriginal Australians.
It is in excellent condition and has been lightly waxed to bring out the beautiful colours and tool marks in the wood.
It measures 33.5” (85cm) long and weighs 410g.
