WW2 German Fireman’s Presentation Axe with Rare Original Leather Hanger
Here on offer is genuine WW2 German Fireman’s beautifully etched presentation axe with a rare original leather hanger.
All the metal fittings and the axe head are nickel-plated and there is just one tiny area near the fireman’s head that shows some loss of the plating.
The axe head is held in place by a large round-headed screw and oval plate on the top of the handle, which is where there is sometimes a maker’s stamp.
In this case there is no maker mark, however I believe that F.W. Holler and Carl Eickhorn only produced this pattern style. Now given the superb quality and finish of this axe, I would think it is a Carl Eickhorn piece.
The ornate axe head is deeply etched with oak leaf designs and fire service scenes on both sides.
The wooden handle has been finished with a thick enamel gloss black paint, which just has a couple of tiny nicks to the finish.
On the sides there are two nickel-plated suspension rings secured with two round-headed screws.
On the front there is a blank dedication plate, also secured by two round-headed screws.
The lower end cap is decorated with three lines and also secured with a screw but this time a dome head.
This mint example also comes with its original and ultra rare WW2 period leather belt loop hanger.
It has two stipple finished alloy-sprung clips that attach to the suspension rings on the handle, allowing it to hang perfectly when fitted to a dress belt.
On the reverse of the belt loop section is an official ink stamp with eagle and swastika, but I can’t make out the writing. There is also an impressed stamp of an eagle with text below, but again it’s very hard to make it out. It looks very similar to the type I have seen on WW2 German leather pistol holsters?
It axe head blade measures 3.5” (9cm) tip to tip and is 6.9” (17.5cm) wide. The handle is 13” (33cm) long and it weighs 650g with the hanger.
This is a rare opportunity to obtain a genuine Nazi period presentation axe with its hanger.
