Antique Horn Handled Ridding Crop - Sword Stick
Here on offer is an antique horn handled riding crop with a concealed blade (short sword stick), probably made in the early 1900’s.
This unusual ridding crop has a horn handle carved into the form of a horses leg. It has some slight chipping to one side of the hoof and may have had a metal horseshoe fitted originally, as I can just make out the remains of 5 tiny fixing holes?
It has a metal scabbard that is covered with thin plaited brown leather which has then been sealed to give an almost bark type finish. At the tip it still retains a leather tongue/flap.
Inside the scabbard is a concealed blade of rectangular form and tapers to a very sharp tip.
The blade has no maker’s mark and is in excellent condition, no rust, just some dents to the slightly uneven tip.
I am not sure of the exact use of this type of crop, other than for personal protection when in the field.
With the blade concealed, the ridding crop measures 20.25” (51.5cm) long and the blade itself is 13.1” (33.3cm) long.
It weighs 170g.
