Unusual WW1 Menin Gate Souvenir - Ballpoint Pen with Large White Celluloid Feather
Here on offer is an unusual WW1 souvenir that is a ballpoint pen fitted with a large white celluloid feather, to look like a Victorian dip pen.
The feather is actually very detailed and appears to be made from an early celluloid or plastic and fits snuggly to a smooth gilt brass pen grip.
Printed on the feather is a coloured image of the famous Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium.
The words YPRES and MENIN GATE MEMORIAL are also printed on the feather.
I assume a number of these souvenirs where made, but I can’t find another example on offer. I doubt that many have survived and the feather can easily be damaged.
This example is in excellent condition with just some loss of plating to the gilt finish. The ink has run out so it doesn’t current write and I am not sure where you would get such a small ink refill?
It measures 11.3” (28.8cm) long and weighs 11g.
