Rare Victorian Board of Trade Rocket Apparatus Bronze Token - Proof of Service at a Wreck

Here on offer is a rare example of Victorian Board of Trade Rocket Apparatus bronze token used for proof of service at a wreck.

During a wreck service when the coastguard officer or the volunteer-in-charge of the rocket apparatus required extra assistance, he enrolled on the spot the helpers needed. As conditions at the scene of a wreck did not normally permit “paper work”, each individual helper was handed one of these tokens, to be redeemed later when he attended for wreck service payment.

On the obverse is a Victorian crown surrounded with the legend PROOF OF SERVICE AT A WRECK.

On the reverse is a Man-o-war surrounded by the legend BOARD OF TRADE ROCKET APPARATUS.


The token has a beautiful patina to the bronze finish with underlying red and brown surfaces.

It measures 1.4” (3.5cm) diameter and weighs 27g.
