Near Mint WW2 German Red Cross Officers Dagger with Hangers and Portepee/Knot

Here on offer is near mint example of a Red Cross Officers dagger complete with the correct hangers and portepee/knot.

The dagger is in near mint condition with a bright nickel-plating finish to all the mounts and fittings, including the scabbard.

The oval shaped pommel is in near mint condition, there is just a tiny spot on the reverse edge that has lost its plating. The star slotted recessed nut on the pommel is very slightly burred, where it has been undone in the past.

The grip is just the beautiful deep orange solid trolon/celluloid type, in mint condition, no cracks or chips to the finish.

It also retains a mint condition silver portepee/knot that has been correctly tied around the grip and looks stunning against the orange grip.

The Red Cross Eagle crossguard retains all its crisp detailing and no loss of plating. The reverse is smooth and still has all its plating in place.

The blade is just stunning and still retains its original cross graining. It measures 9.8” (25cm) in length and is in truly mint condition.

The blade is also complete with its black leather scabbard buffer pad.

The nickel-plated scabbard is again in near mint condition, apart from the small loss of plating by the two screws at the very top. If I am being super picky, there is a pin head sized dent about half way down the upper side of the scabbard.

The throat is held in place by two round-headed screws on the sides.

The hanger suspension loops are the rectangular type. Now my understanding is that the shape of the scabbard ‘loops’ on these daggers doesn’t indicate whether they are Red Cross or Social Welfare. The shape, “round” verses “rectangular” is purely down to the different manufacturers at that time.

The type of hangers worn with the dagger, dictates one from the other.

Accompanying the dagger is an excellent set of rare to find, Red Cross hangers.

The brocade is in excellent condition being a gray/tan colour with twin silver stripes being piped with red edges. There are just a few small stain spots on the longer hanger.

The reverse of the straps has fine tan velvet cloth showing little to no wear, just again some light stain marks this time on the smaller strap.

The top clip is a plain style aluminum snap version. The buckles are of oval aluminum with matching aluminum slides. The snaps are a smooth push in type and show loss of plating through use.

The dagger in the scabbard measures a total of 15.25” (38.8cm) long and weighs 590g.

A rare dagger to find in this condition, they normally show plating loss. Also along the scarce hangers and knot, it just makes a wonderful set that can only increase in value.
