Stunning Antique Victorian Mahogany Striped Wooden Page-Turner with Hallmarked Silver Fittings 1893
Here on offer is a beautiful example of an antique Victorian hard wood page-turner with hallmarked silver fittings dating to 1893.
The page turner measures an impressive 17.75” long and is shaped in the form of a long wooden knife with tapering blade edge.
The wood appears to be a hard African “tiger striped” mahogany and has a stunning pattern.
The handle section is topped with a beautifully hand embossed, scrolled silver hallmarked cap and at the lower end a silver belt and buckle.
The silver cap is stamped with a makers mark and a full set of English hallmarks.
The hallmarks show the Lion Passant for English sterling silver (925), the Lion head for the London assay office and the date letter “S” for the year 1893.
The maker mark is “SAL”, which unfortunately I can’t find any reference to on the usual reference sites?
This may well be one of the many provincial silversmiths that existed in the Victorian period? Whoever the maker was they where indeed very skilled silversmiths.
The page-turner measures 17.75” (45cm) long and at its widest point is 1.2” (3cm) wide.
It weighs 105g.
