Mint WW2 German Wehrmacht White Ceramic Dinner Plate by Rhenania of Duisdorf Bonn dated 1939
Here on offer is a mint WW2 German Wehrmacht white ceramic dinner plate by Rhenania of Duisdorf Bonn, dated 1939.
This plate came from the wonderful island of Jersey, where I purchased it from the Jersey Stamp shop over 40 years ago.
The 9.25” diameter dinner plate is in undamaged, mint condition and has a clear maker’s stamp on the base that depicts the Nazi national eagle and swastika with the correct Rhenania Porzellanfabrik GmbH (1935–1957) mark and the date 1939.
Rhenania Porzellanfabrik GmbH was established in 1904 in Bonn district Duisdorf. It was founded by Carl Schumann and his stepbrother Eduard Schumann.
They came from Arzberg where they gained experience working for their father Heinrich Schumann who in 1881 founded Schumann & Riess porcelain factory. Carl Schumann inherited the business and since 1892 the company was called Porzellanfabrik Carl Schumann GmbH & Co.
The Duisdorf company was Carl's second factory. It functioned till 1908 as Keramische Werke G.m.b.H. After Eduard Schumann died, Carl sold it to Gustav Wahl, a merchant from Bonn. In 1912 the factory was named Westdeutsche Porzellanfabrik GmbH. In 1935 the company filed for bankruptcy. Production was stopped.
The Westdeutsche Porzellanfabrik GmbH was bought by the Rhenania Wirtschaftbetriebs GmbH. The factory was renamed Rhenania Porzellanfabrik GmbH. It was owned by Georg Kettner.
The factory was active until 1958. It produced hotel tableware and decorative porcelain.
The plate measures 9.25” (23.5cm) diameter and weighs a heavy 685g.
