Vintage Royal Agricultural Society of England – Governors Lady’s Badge and Membership Badge set with Case
Here on offer is a Royal Agricultural Society of England - Governors Lady’s Badge and Membership Badge set with the original case.
The Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) was founded in 1838 as the English Agricultural Society to “encourage and promote technical innovation and communicate practical knowledge of value to farmers”.
The RASE were granted a Royal Charter in 1840 and in 1845 founded the Royal Agricultural College. In 1973, they also established the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
The RASE held their first Royal Show in 1839 and thereafter annually until these were discontinued in 2009.
Today, the RASE operate as a UK Registered Charity whose core roles are in the transfer of agricultural scientific knowledge, technology and best practise to the farming industry and rural communities.
This is the only set on both badges that I have ever come across.
The Governors Lady’s Badge is in the from of a bar brooch and seems to be made from a gilt metal inset with white, blue and red enamel. It has a Kings crown set above the initials RASE and the raised words:
GOVERNORS LADY’S BADGE
The membership badge seems to be made from a gilt metal with a dark blue enamel centre. On the front in the centre are the initials RASE and it is surrounded by the raised letters:
PRACTICE WITH SCIENCE
At the top is the pierced image of the Kings Crown.
On the reverse it has the brooch pin type fixing with “C” clasp.
The case has a brown and black patterned leatherette covering and is stamped on the top with the RASE details and the word BADGE in gold.
The interior is ivory silk and blue velvet and inside the lid it has printed the maker’s details:
Coventry Silvercraft, Ltd
This example is in mint condition and looks to me as if it has never been worn, just kept in its case.
The Governors Lady’s Badge is 1.75 wide and weighs 5g.
The membership badge measures 1.5” (3.8cm) long and weighs 8.3g.
