Rare WW1 British Officers Wristwatch Shrapnel/Watch Protector Dated 1916

Here on offer is a rare WW1 British Officers metal wristwatch shrapnel/watch protector dated 1916.

This example is in unused MINT condition and retains all of its original nickel or silver plating.

I can’t find another example of this watch protector on the internet for reference, but understand that these “full hunter” cover types where less popular than the cross hatched or pierced types, as you had to physically open the cover the see the time.

Stamped under the main cover are some manufacturing details and a British pattern number:

2A
THE T.S
WATCH PROTECTOR
PAT. 6612/16

Therefore it would appear that this version was called “THE T.S” and its pattern number 6612 was issued in 1916 (/16).

I am not sure if the 2A is possibly the size or model type?

The two metal prongs that hinge on the cover seem to fit through the lugs on an early wristwatch and are held in place by the adjustable slider bar. The cover can then be pulled open by using the extended tag on the cover.

Although this full hunter type cover would give the best protection for the watch glass, I can imagine it would be fiddly to open and close in muddy trench combat conditions.

This is a rare opportunity to obtain an unusual variant of a WW1 watch protector in MINT condition that would enhance any watch collection.

It measures 1.3” (3.4cm) diameter and weighs 6.2g.
