Rare Large Antique Victorian Horn Cased Magnifying Glass - Single Lens Loupe
Here on offer is a rare large Victorian era loupe, consisting of a single lens, which pivots out from the integral horn outer casing.
It is in excellent condition with no damage to the natural horn casing. Horn is clearly a natural material and is prone to some drying out with age. However this impressive magnifier seems to be fully useable and still very strong. There are some very light usage scratch marks on the slightly domed casing from where it has been rested on a desk over the years of use.
The thick double domed lens is crystal clear and offers a very strong level of magnification. I have tried to show this in my photos.
The item measures about 4.9” (12.5cm) with the lens unfolded and 2.75 inches (7 cm) with the lenses folded away inside the outer casing.
It is 1” (2.5cm) thick and weighs a heavy 105g!
This is a great magnifier for any collector of optical or scientific type items and also ideal for daily use.
It may originally have been designed for use by botanists as a form of simple microscope.
