Fine Victorian English Silver Vesta Case by Constantine & Floyd Ltd 1896

Here on offer is an elegant antique Victorian solid silver Vesta Case by Constantine & Floyd Ltd, dating to 1896.

The Vesta Case has been beautifully engraved with ornate floral scrollwork on the front and back. The front also has two engraved gothic initials:

G H

in a circular cartouche.

There are four very tiny raised "pin heads" of silver on the front, that under a strong loop show up as the remains of the silver that wasn't removed properly when the jeweller chiseled the pattern out around the circular cartouche. Please see my last photo.

It has a deeply set the strike plate embedded into the base.

There is a ring attached to the spine to allow the owner to fix the Vesta to a watch chain.

The lid hinges up with the spring hinge working well and forming a tight fit to the main body, when closed.

The interior has signs of a gilt finish which is unusual and a true sign of quality. There are even two hallmarks impressed into the inside of the lid, the Lion and the dated letter ‘W’.


The Vesta Case itself, has on one side of the inner lip, a full set of English hallmarks and the English makers mark, “Ce & Fd ” in a rectangle which is that of Constantine & Floyd Ltd.

The hallmarks are the Anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the Lion tells us that the case is made from English sterling silver and is followed by the year mark ‘W’ for 1896.

It measures 1.8” (4.6cm) by 1.3” (3.3cm) by 0.4” (1cm) and weighs 23g.

This is a fine and very early example of a Vesta Case by Constantine & Floyd Ltd, that is in excellent condition. A true collectors piece!
