Original WW1 ‘FUMSUP’ & TOUCH WOOD Soldier’s Lucky Gold Plated Charm
Here on offer is an original WW1 ‘FUMSUP’ and TOUCH WOOD soldiers lucky Gold Plated charm.
These charms were given to WW1 soldiers as a “Good Luck” token that could be carried with them into battle.
They come in all sorts of types and this one has a lovely Gold Plated body with moving arms, with detailed fingers and Thumbs UP.
It is fitted with a woodenhead, so the soldier could ‘Touch Wood’ for luck before a battle.
A wire goes through the head allowing it to swivel and is folded into a loop at the top so it can be attached to a chain.
The hollow metal body is in excellent original condition.
The egg shaped woodenhead is still a solid piece of wood, with no cracks, but it has lost the painted eyes and nose it would have had originally, through usage.
I can imagine a poor soldier rubbing the head for luck before having to endure the horrors of the battles of WW1.
The charm measures 1.2” (3cm) long and 0.4” (1cm) wide across the arms.
It weighs 1.7g.
