WW2 German 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by F. W. HOLLER – Brought Back by British Solider Albert Smith
Here on offer is an excellent “untouched and fresh to market” example of a WW2 German 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by F.W. HOLLER, Solingen.
This dagger is part of a small collection of items that I have recently acquired from a family member of a WW2 British solider named Albert Smith.
Albert Smith served with the 7th Cameroonian Rifles who where part of the 52nd (Lowland) Division. They landed in Ostend in October 1944 and battled on through to the assault on Bremen in April 1945.
He brought back some war trophies, which included this Luftwaffe Dagger, a Red Cross Hewer and a German Army Belt and Buckle.
Apparently they have been in a suitcase under the stairs since the end of WW2.
I have also listed these other items.
This fine dagger has the aluminium fittings to the hilt and plated finish to the scabbard.
The Pommel is in excellent condition and the hand-enhanced oak leaves remain very detailed.
The ivory coloured grip is in excellent condition, no splits, chips or cracks. There are just some very slight scratch marks to one edge on the reverse, that could be cleaned up to be invisible if so required. It is the celluloid over wood version, which still has its original springy twisted grip wire.
The aluminium Luftwaffe crossguard features a finely detailed eagle, which flies to the viewer's left and clutches a mobile swastika in his talons. The reverse has the pebbled pattern with some of the factory blackening intact. The upper quillion arms have the very detailed engraved oak leaves and acorns pattern.
The ferrule has the finely detailed oak leaf design.
The plated blade measures 10.2” (25.7cm) in length and does have some slight greying to the finish in certain areas. I believe this would clean off with some metal polish. The edges are nick free and the tip remains needle sharp.
On the reverse of the blade, the ricasso is etched with the F.W.HOLLER, thermometer trademark.
The original blue leather blade buffer is in place, fixed inside the crossguard at the base of the blade.
The stipple-finished scabbard is straight and dent free. The plated finish has darkened over the years and shows some areas of loss through wear, but would clean up to a brighter finish, again if required.
The scabbard throat is held in place by a single headless screw on the reverse and both scabbard hanger rings are in place.
The dagger in the scabbard measures a total of 17” (43.2cm) long and weighs 350g.
This is an excellent genuine example of an untouched “Vet Bring Back”, Luftwaffe Dagger that would make a great addition to any German edged weapons collection.
